Alexandria’s new Green Building Plan

The city of Alexandria, Va., is looking to adopt a new Green Building Plan, a set of environmental standards for new developments. This plan is a revision to the city’s 2019 Green Building Chapter.  The 2019 plan was extremely successful, Alexandria describes themselves as a regional leader for green buildings. With nearly 550 buildings receiving  a green building certification since 2007. In 2025, a report recognized Alexandria as 17th in the nation for the number of LEED certified buildings per capita.

Outlined in the new plan it hopes to, “Promote Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Buildings Buildings should be designed and operated in a manner to minimize energy use and carbon emissions. The Green Building Plan will advance high performance buildings to reduce building emissions.” The new standard applies to both public and private projects. Key components of the plan include the encouragement of full electrification of all buildings, energy and water meters, energy-efficient appliances, flexibility for adaptive reuse projects and more.

The plan is targeted to be adopted in early 2026.
