Five unusual ways to make buildings greener (literally)
In cities worldwide, the integration of plants in buildings is increasingly common. Some methods spin off of ideas that were implemented centuries ago such as building in and around trees while others provide a fresh and unconventional outlook, like treating architecture as compost. The rise of “green walls” in which metal-framed walls are lined with plants supercharged with nutrients in an absence of soil has become just one unusual possibility many architects and designers are pursuing in an attempt to find sustainable building solutions.
