Green building is steadily gaining momentum in Michigan, with housing professionals noting its long-term environmental and financial benefits. Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity of Michigan have embraced green practices for nearly a decade, including building homes with solar panels and emphasizing energy-conscious design using recycled materials. Experts agree that green building continues to evolve through better solar technology, improved insulation and smarter design.

According to Chad Kotlarz, founder of Livwell Homes, “If you build a high-quality home, it’s gonna last for hundreds of years,” he said. “Can you think of the amount of energy that you can save in the span of 100 years or even 150 years? It’s really remarkable. So we have to think beyond our own lifetimes. We have to be thinking about the lifetime of the home and how it will affect generations to come.”
