Island Community Explores Pathways To Strengthen Energy Reliability

The U.S. Department of Energy is helping Edgartown, Massachusetts plan its first microgrid to power municipal buildings during outages, thanks to technical support from the department’s Energy to Communities (E2C) program. With help from national lab researchers, the town evaluated solar and battery storage strategies for a Highway Department site, ultimately securing a $30,500 grant for further engineering studies. The project aims to improve energy resilience on Martha’s Vineyard and could serve as a model for nearby island communities.
