Phius Passive Projects Design Competition 2025
Phius announced the winners of its Passive Projects Design Competition, celebrating high-performance buildings across all climate zones that achieved full passive certification. Projects were evaluated on their energy performance, design difficulty, climate and site challenges, cost-effectiveness, craftsmanship and occupant health. Awards spanned a wide range of categories, including high-rise and low-rise multifamily, single-family, commercial/institutional, retrofit, student housing, public space, international design and urban renewal. From this broad field, two top distinctions were named: Best Overall Project and Best Project by a Young Professional.
The Betty Greene Apartments in Boston, designed by Utile Design, earned the title of Best Overall Project, while the J.J. Carroll House, also in Boston and designed by MASS Design Group, won both Best Project by a Young Professional and the top honor in the high-rise multifamily category. Other notable winners included Spark Side in New Hampshire for single-family, The Pierce in Illinois for Source Zero, The Bank Lofts in New York for retrofit and The Academy for Global Citizenship in Chicago for commercial/institutional excellence. Additional honorable mentions and special recognitions highlighted innovative work in student design, international Passive House architecture and urban renewal, showcasing the breadth and advancement of passive building practices worldwide.
