Project of the Week: Fall Brook Passive House
Richard Pedranti Architect introduces his project, the recently certified Fall Brook Passive House. The architecture firm known for their forward focused and energy-efficient design teamed up with Bill Case Contracting, Inc. to complete this project. The home, built in Livingston Manor, NY, sits on 60 acres. The passive house encompasses three-stories and 4,737-square feet.
Envelope Assemblies include R-28 foundation, R-38 wall and R-72 roof. The windows are Mavrik Triple Pane Inswing Tilt/Turn and work with a fresh air ventilation system to enhance energy recovery. The enhanced insulation and airtight construction (0.6ACH@50Pa) allows for the home to be comfortable without a conventional HVAC system.
“The RPA approach dramatically cuts energy consumption, fosters significantly healthier indoor environments, and delivers exceptionally more comfortable living conditions,” said Richard Pedranti, Principal at RPA. “It’s been incredibly rewarding helping Jennifer [the homeowner] realize her vision of an energy-efficient passive house.”

To achieve Phius Certification, the team used the compliance tool, WUFI Passive whole building energy modeling software. The project team included Richard Pedranti, AIA, CPHC Michelle Sangster, CPHC and Structural Engineer PLACE Structural Design.
“The Fall Brook Passive House represents a significant stride in residential design, showing what’s possible in a high-performance home,” explained James Ortega, Phius Certification Program Director. “Phius Design Certification ensures that this project was designed to achieve its goals for energy savings and cost-effectiveness.”
