Project of the Week: Passive House in Santa Rosa

A certified Passive House in Santa Rosa, Calif., designs sustainably and for wildfire resilience. When the client lost their home in the 2017 Tubbs Fire, they faced the question many Californian homeowners face on how to rebuild. Signum Architecture stepped in for the challenge. The design team found that the PHIUS certification provided energy-efficient benefits as well as airtight and fire-resilient design.

Signum partner and co-founder Jarrod Denton, AIA,  is one of the earliest certified Passive House consultants in the United States. He led the design team for the project in collaboration with Wright Residential Construction. Utilizing Passive House construction methods enabled the high-performance building standard that excelles the project to consume up to 90% less heating and cooling energy than conventional buildings. The 3,250-square-foot home also includes as a mono-pitched, offset gable roof  and is Zero Energy Ready Home certification ready.

The clients of the Santa Rosa project were extremely passionate about the certification and design process, “The ensuing design process involved an extremely close working partnership between owners and architect,” said Denton. “Deeply immersed in their project, the couple chose the interior finishes and fixtures themselves.”
