Pura Vida Floating Home
The Pura Vida Floating Home is a private residence built on Portage Bay in Seattle, Washington, embracing both functional and aesthetic flexibility. Its design, 1,780 square feet for the home itself plus 820 square feet of decking, is inspired by the Costa Rican “Pura Vida” philosophy (Pure Life), prioritizing serene connections to nature, relaxed living and a joyful focus on what’s most important. The public pavilion area along the water features large expanses of glass and can open on three sides to fully embrace lake views; alternatively, sliding slat screens and solar shades offer privacy and shelter when needed.
The two-story shore-side section of the home creates private quarters, including a rooftop deck for larger gatherings. Interior spaces mix woods, stone, glass and resin to reflect the lakeside setting, enabling natural light and nature views throughout. Additional standout features include a cozy library with custom cabinetry, a double-height stairwell capped by a skylight and a spacious bedroom suite designed for light, quiet and repose. The design responds to both environmental conditions and social lifestyle needs, giving the owners flexibility, connection and seclusion all in one floating package.
