USGBC announces top states for LEED in 2025

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released the top ten states for LEED in 2025. This list recognizes the states by total LEED certified projects, gross area and gross square feet per capita. Massachusetts placed first for the second year in a row with 121 certified projects and 4.24 gross square feet per capita. Illinois continued their second place with 79 certified projects and 3.6 gross square feet per capita. While the District of Columbia as a federal district is not included in the rankings, it boasted 115 projects with gross square feet per capita of 49.20.

“LEED is helping states accelerate and scale their approaches to lower carbon, healthier spaces, and smarter operations across every sector of the economy,” said Peter Templeton, president and CEO, USGBC. “This year’s Top 10 States demonstrate how innovation and performance come together to deliver measurable results. Their leadership shows that high-performing buildings are not the exception—they are the expectation.”
