Water efficiency becomes part of sustainable home design

With freshwater remaining in short supply, water efficiency is becoming a key part of sustainable home design. In addition to healthy environmental practices, there are higher utility costs and other factors that make water efficiency an important aspect in a home’s sustainable design.

Improved water usage is also connected to less energy consumption, since heating water often uses a significant amount of energy. Home water-saving technologies can also reduce the energy needed for appliances.

Shorter pipe runs, recirculation systems and pressure regulation help prevent water waste and boost efficiency. Replacing outdated appliances with ENERGY STAR-certified ones and adding drip technology to the home’s irrigation system are other ways to design sustainably.
