Willoughby Corner Opens With Nearly Two Hundred Affordable Homes
Colorado’s largest Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) development has completed its first phase of production, opening 192 affordable homes. Planned since 2017, Willoughby Corner is a $114 million project designed to alleviate the Colorado housing crisis. A limited amount will be allocated towards those earning 60% or less of the area’s median income.
The all-electric community is powered by solar and geothermal energy, and includes amenities such as community center, gardens and more.
The project is not just about opening another typical affordable housing community, however, as careful planning involved local, state and federal agencies. Collaboration involved the City of Lafayette, the Colorado Department of Local Affairs/Division of Housing and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Additionally,$15 million worth of infrastructure improvements was invested towards roads, transit routes and more.
With 192 affordable homes in the first phase alone, Willoughby Corner is the largest affordable housing development in Boulder County. A planned 128 rental homes to be developed in the next phase of the project will further cement the impact the community will make. In total, over 400 new ZERH affordable homes will be constructed by the end of all project phases.
According to Boulder County Commissioner Marta Loachamin, “With the completion of the first phase of this project, we are celebrating 192 new affordable homes in Boulder County, as well as the generations of people who will become a part of the Willoughby community.”
