Green Project of the Week: Michigan Net Zero

Michigan Builder Dale Hulst, has a proclaimed passion for net-zero living and built the first-ever Phius certified in the Grand Rapids neighborhood. This certification is not the only one Hulst and his company Michigan Net Zero is striving for. The project received seven certifications including Phius, GreenStar Platinum, LEED Platinum, Energy Star, EPA Indoor airPLUS and EPA WaterSense.

“I learn and create in order to help people live sustainably,” Hulst told local news channel Fox17. “My motivation to do this was to do my part, to leave the world in a little better place than when I found it.” The property sits at 1,510 square feet with three-bedrooms, two-baths and a dedicated office space. It also has solar panels on the roof and charging for two EVs.

Hulst founded the company after retirement from a HVAC plant manager role in 2021. “Right now, we have the opportunity to build a better world,” said Dale. “Michigan Net Zero provides a catalyzing model to help others transition to net zero design, construction and life.”
