Phius changes certification requirements

Phius, the passive building standard and certifier announced they are changing certification requirements and pausing the requirement to earn the Department of Energy (DOE) Efficient New Homes Multifamily Version 2 certification (formerly Zero Energy Ready Homes). This only applies to multifamily projects and residential portions of mixed-use projects. This comes as the Phius team found the new DOE certification delayed and created barriers for projects attempting to earn Phius certification. This suspension of requirements is expected to be temporary and addressed in the Phius 2027 certification standard update.

“This decision is meant to allow necessary flexibility for teams pursuing Phius Certification while maintaining the critical aspects of the DOE Efficient New Homes program,” wrote the Phius certification team in a release. “To accomplish this, Phius will continue to require the majority of checklist items from the DOE Efficient New Homes program, but teams will no longer need to provide proof of certification as part of the Phius Certification process.”
