USGBC shares February advocacy and policy highlights

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) engages in advocacy across the state, local and federal level for green building initiatives and decarbonization policies.

In February, the USGBC team engaged closely with the Housing for the 21st Century Act (H.R. 6644), state policy trends and cities adopting LEED requirements for city buildings.

On the Federal level, USGBC noted the new federal requirements for the IRA Green and Resilient Retrofit Program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The new requirements stripped the mandatory measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and does not allow use of funds for solar PV or EV charging infrastructure. USGBC expressed their support for this program.

On the state level, USGBC expressed concern for new policies in Virginia, Hawai’i and Missouri. In Florida, USGBC approves of the proposed reliance tax credit while opposing legislation to prohibit zero carbon policies.

The USGBC celebrates the city of Madison, Wis., for raising its green building requirements for all City-owned facilities, now requiring LEED Gold certification for all new construction projects.
