Why Zone 0 is critical in homebuilding

Defensible space is an important factor in stopping or slowing the spread of wildfire. Defensible space can be divided into three specific zones, with Zone 0 covering the first 5 feet of space from a home. By creating a non-combustible Zone 0, homes are effectively protected from embers spreading a fire. The zone also reduces the intensity with which a fire burns if it does ignite.

Embers from fires can get caught up in smoke and wind and be carried for long distances. Homes can be vulnerable to new fire ignitions in several areas, including roofs, gutters, windows and vents. The best way to secure a defensible zone is to avoid combustible materials and replace them with fire-resistant materials in the home’s design. Consider safer alternatives when designing a home’s landscape and reduce ignition points surrounding the structure.
