California reaches 1,500 Firewise designated communities
CAL FIRE announced the state officially reached over 1,500 Firewise designated communities. The Firewise program is led by the National Fire Protection Association and is a structured approach to mitigate wildfire risk. The 1,500th community is the Woodfords in Alpine County, Calif.
The Firewise designation is a voluntary achievement earned through the development of a wildfire risk assessment plan, a wildfire action plan and community engagement with collaboration between residents, local fire departments and other community stakeholders.
“Supporting communities in achieving NFPA Firewise USA® recognition has been a central component of California’s wildfire preparedness strategy in recent years. Reaching our 1500th Firewise community marks a significant milestone for statewide wildfire resilience,” said Chief Daniel Berlant, California State Fire Marshal. “As we recognize this community’s achievement, we also extend our appreciation to all 1500 Firewise communities across California that have demonstrated their commitment to reducing wildfire risk and making their neighborhoods safer.”
