ENERGY STAR program to be run by DOE by this time next year
The transition plan for the ENERGY STAR program to shift from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversight to the Department of Energy (DOE) was made public last week.
In accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement signed on March 3, 2026, the transition plan further outlines the agency’s workflow for the program.
The document outlined that both agencies will commit to this transition no more than twelve months after the plan’s finalization. The workstreams are classified into three transfer phases: knowledge, legal and IT systems.
Knowledge includes the documentation, resources, and standard operating procedures covering trademark and ownership of the ENERGY STAR program, as well as training, staffing and leadership consolidation.
Legal includes the transfer of the ENERGY STAR trademark, EPA-only partnership agreements, ENERGY STAR agreements and other arrangements with foreign governments.
The document stated that the transfer of IT and systems will take the most amount of time, with a target completion of July 2027. This phase includes transferring the hosting of ENERGY STAR IT systems, which contain a complex infrastructure of tools, applications and databases.
