New Hampshire’s portable solar law goes into effect in 2027
New Hampshire’s new law regarding balcony solar panels is set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2027. The law defines portable solar generation devices and exempts them from utility interconnection requirements and net metering provisions. The bill also directs the building code review board to update the codes for portable solar devices and authorizes the state Department of Energy to adopt rules regarding interconnection requirements for portable solar generation devices.
The new law addresses the growing interest in energy-efficient homes among New Hampshire’s residents.
The new law states that plug-in systems must be capped at 1,200 watts AC output per electrical meter, which is consistent with other state plug-in solar laws. Homeowners will be able to install the portable solar without a building permit, so long as the systems meet safety code requirements.
