DOE to potentially revoke appliance efficiency mandates

The Department of Energy (DOE) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to permanently end energy conservation standards for home appliances and equipment. This comes after an executive order from President Trump, “Unleashing Prosperity through Deregulation.” The DOE mandate covers air conditioning units, gas stoves, washing and drying machines, water heaters, refrigerators, among other appliances.

“AHAM applauds the Department of Energy for acting swiftly and delivering a proposed Process Rule that reflects years of constructive engagement with manufacturers, consumers and other stakeholders,” said Kelly Mariotti, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers President, in a statement.

DOE also issued a Request for Information seeking public input on the methodologies used in developing energy conservation standards for covered products and equipment. Comments will be accepted for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register.
