Sustainability trends in modern home building

The industry is seeing a rise in sustainability trends in modern home building, as a direct response to energy and building codes, climate, wildfire risk and, overall, how people want to live. Homeowners are becoming more environmentally conscious both inside and outside their homes. Energy efficiency is a defining feature of homes in 2026. California’s Title 24 code requires all new homes to meet demanding insulation and glazing targets, while state law also mandates solar panels on new single-family construction.

Across the U.S., homeowners are increasingly choosing eco-friendly materials that reduce long-term costs, such as low-VOC paints, recycled-content insulation and sustainably sourced cabinetry.

Natural light is now a deliberate design strategy; large glazed openings and clerestory windows bring daylight deep into living areas, making the space feel open and larger.

The indoor-outdoor connection has become seamless in the 2026 design. Sliding glass walls dissolve the line between interior living areas and the outdoor spaces beyond, while covered patios and outdoor kitchens extend daily living into the yard year-round. A 2026 home blends modern interiors with outdoor spaces that function as true additional living areas.
