Legislation aims to advance plug-in solar in New York

The Sunny Act aims to cut red tape that blocks the installation of plug-in solar systems in single-family homes, apartments, or condos. Once signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, the bill will enable New York residents to buy and install portable plug-in solar appliances that can be placed on a balcony, deck or yard, then plugged into a wall outlet to provide solar power for their homes.

The legislation also sets safety standards to ensure that plug-in solar appliances sold to New York residents are safe to use with homes’ wiring and that, if utility power goes out, the appliance cannot send power to the street and endanger line workers.
