Portland records over 50,000 home energy scores
In 2018, the City of Portland’s Home Energy Score Ordinance went into effect. This required all homes publicly advertised for sale to disclose a Home Energy Score and Report.
This summer, the city reported it has recorded over 50,000 Home Energy Scores since the program began. This accounts for an estimated 30% of the total housing stock.
The Home Energy Report managed by the city is a simple 1-10 scale rating for energy efficiency and an estimate of annual energy costs.
A recorded energy score is valid for eight years, meaning some of the first recorded homes would need a new score if up for sale.
For builders in the Portland area, this means homebuyers are informed on high-performance practices from the start and, if buying an existing home, may look for ways to improve the home’s efficiency.
