St. Louis gets its first certified Passive House
The eastern side of the Mississippi just got its first certified Passive House, reflecting a growing national trend toward energy-efficient home construction.
Designed by Virescent for a young family in St. Louis, the 3,466-square-foot home is designed with an airtight building envelope, high-performance windows and a heat-recovery ventilation system. The home also features a 10.8-kilowatt rooftop solar array to generate an estimated 14,844 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. Its estimated HERS rating is 33 and -14 with renewables.
“Most prospective homeowners who are curious about Passive House are initially looking for energy efficiency, but many don’t realize the same design strategies also make their homes quieter, healthier, more comfortable,” said Jessica Deem, licensed architect and owner of Virescent Architecture + Design.
