NAHB tells why home orientation matters for sustainability
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recently addressed how builders can build sustainably before the foundation is even poured. One of the most energy-efficient aspects of the home begins in the design phase with the home’s orientation.
As homebuyers expect more out of their homes, thoughtful site planning delivers the first steps to improve sustainable design and marketability. As Amy Manz, NAHB Program Manager, Sustainability & Green Building, described, angling homes on an east-west axis reduces operational costs for clients and provides summer shading and passive heating in the winter. This design also optimizes the potential for solar on the roof.
“A well-oriented, climate-responsive home can maintain more stable indoor temperatures, provide balanced glare-free natural light and support passive ventilation during power outages,” said Manz. “In short, it continues to function, keeping it livable in during adverse circumstances, which homeowners value.”
