Springfield, Missouri proposes update to building codes
The Springfield City Council heard the first reading of an ordinance to update building regulations to the 2024 International Building Codes (IBC), with local amendments and retention of the 2018 Energy Code. The updates are tentatively expected to take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
The IBC 2024 update offers new modern construction regulations, expanded mass timber allowances, improved structural and safety provisions, as well as modernized plumbing and storage rules.
“Each International Code Council building code has tailored administrative rules specific to its terminology and subject matter, which enhances clarity and reduces overlapping rules and regulatory conflicts,” said BDS Director Martin Gugel. “This would result in clearer compliance and enforcement, which would help us locally because it creates more predictable rules for builders and homeowners.”
The updates aim to adopt a modern set of the 2024 codes and recommend amendments to meet the development needs of Springfield, Mo. The update also coordinates with Greene County to bring building codes closer in alignment.
