ACEEE study highlights advantage for high-performance builders
According to new research from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), builders could deliver up to $31,000 in cost savings per household with energy-efficient building practices. ACEEE’s latest research on energy waste is a resource for builders to market the value energy-efficient homes deliver.
The researchers suggest that the U.S. is capable of cutting energy-wasting costs by an average of $215 billion per year. For residential buildings using strategies such as more insulation, newer efficient technologies such as ENERGY STAR certified appliances and heat pumps: practices many high-performance builders already employ.
“The largest potential future savings are from policies that would shift the market from wasteful electric resistance and gas furnace heating to highly efficient heat pumps,” wrote the ACEEE researchers. “Today, about 25 million households use inefficient electric resistance heating equipment, often baseboard heating, as their primary space heating (EIA 2023); each inefficient unit represents a large opportunity for energy and bill savings and to reduce winter peak electricity demand.”
