Green Project of the Week: Kivi Mäki Passive House
Built by Durango Green Homes and designed by Courtney King Studios, the Kivi Mäki Passive House is a mountain contemporary home in Durango that is 92% more efficient than a typical home. The 7.2 Kilowatts of high-efficiency solar panels that cover the entire third-story south-facing roof will produce enough power to run the home and charge an electric vehicle. The home achieved a HERS Index Score of 8, thanks to its airtight, thermal-bridge-free construction, insulation, thermally efficient doors and windows and controlled ventilation.
The exterior of the Kivi Mäki Passive House is virtually fireproof, featuring 22 Gauge metal siding, standing-seam metal roofing, Shou Sugi Ban Charred wood siding and stucco. The entire exterior envelope of the house was covered with two coats of a liquid-applied, air and moisture barrier. This barrier helps to protect the wood structure, creates better protection at exterior penetrations and seals all of the gaps in the framing from air and moisture intrusion.
