Flagstaff, Arizona, proposes building, energy and fire code updates
The Flagstaff City Council is considering a first read of the proposed 2024 Suite of Building and Fire Codes updates, which were first presented during the Sept. 8, 2026, Council Meeting.
The updates focus on three major areas: the Building Code, the Energy Code and the Wildland Urban Interface Code. Proposed changes to the Wildland Urban Interface Code would require new homes to be built using noncombustible materials. Updates to the Energy Code would ensure new homes are solar-ready, electric-appliance-ready and EV-charging-ready, as well as require radon mitigation in new construction. Proposed changes to the Building Code include increased snow load requirements and improved plumbing efficiency.
The proposed adoption aligns construction regulations in Flagstaff with the most current code editions and industry standards, allowing the community to benefit from advancements in building safety, resiliency, energy efficiency, accessibility and construction technology.
