New Colorado wildfire resiliency code will take effect July 1
New Colorado wildfire mitigation standards will take effect in Steamboat Springs on July 1, 2026. The Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code requires many new residential and commercial construction projects to incorporate wildfire-resistant building materials, defensible space practices and updated vegetation management.
Beginning July 1, permit applications must include all required wildfire resiliency documentation at the time of submission. For single-family and duplex projects, this may include landscape and vegetation management plans demonstrating compliance with defensible space and ignition-resistant landscaping.
“Wildfire preparedness and resiliency are essential priorities for our community,” said Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Chief Chuck Cerasoli. “These new statewide standards are designed to better protect people, homes, businesses and critical infrastructure while helping communities adapt to increasing wildfire risk.”
