Kansas City introduces green building incentive ordinance
The Kansas City Regional Association of Realtors (KCRAR) Public Policy Committee released a Model Green Building Incentive Ordinance aiming to reframe the conversation around sustainability and housing. This model ordinance demonstrates that housing expansion and the pursuit of environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. The new ordinance proposes a voluntary, incentive-based strategy that encourages builders and developers to incorporate energy-efficient and high-performance building practices while keeping projects financially viable.
“Built on the principles of incentives over mandates, housing supply protection, market-based solutions and administrative simplicity, this new model ordinance gives local leaders a practical tool to encourage sustainable development without sacrificing housing opportunity,” said KCRAR Senior Vice President of Government Affairs James Toy. “This model can help communities across the region build a greener future while keeping the dream of homeownership within reach.”
Kansas City communities adopting the framework can offer benefits such as expedited permitting, streamlined approvals, fee reductions, tax incentives, grants, rebates and voluntary density bonuses for projects that meet recognized green building standards.
