NGBS Green hits major milestone of 800,000 certified homes
The National Green Building Standards (NGBS) announced on Sept. 17, 2026, that it had surpassed 800,000 certified homes.
This follows NGBS hitting its 750,000th certified home in March 2026. Founded in 2009 and administered by Home Innovation Research Labs, NGBS provides third-party verification of green building practices.
The 800,000th certification is a part of a 525-home community, the Old Ivy Residences, in Charlottesville, Va.
“Reaching 800,000 NGBS Green Certified homes is an incredible milestone, but what’s even more meaningful is what that number represents,” said Michelle Foster, Vice President of Sustainability at Home Innovation Research Labs. “It represents hundreds of thousands of homes where builders and developers have made sustainability part of how they build, and where those efforts have been independently verified against a rigorous national standard. As the residential construction industry continues to evolve, third-party certification gives homeowners, residents, developers, and other stakeholders confidence that sustainability is more than a claim. It is demonstrated through specific, measurable practices and verified in the homes where people live.”
