Green Project of the Week: Saturn Haus
Designed within the desert landscapes of Joshua Tree, The Saturn Haus stands as both a sustainable and architectural marvel. Conceived by writer and artist Wendy Wacker and completed in collaboration with Northworks Architects, the sculptural, off-grid estate merges sustainable innovation with serene luxury.
Built on 160 acres of pristine high desert terrain, the project began as a remote retreat for writing and reflection, then evolved into a fully self-sustaining micro-grid compound comprising several pavilions, each oriented to the desert’s rhythms of light and shadow. The main house, independent casita, music studio and art gallery total over 4,200 square feet of living space, unified by open-air corridors and vast glass walls framing panoramic desert vistas.
Polished concrete, steel beams and glass walls evoke both strength and softness, allowing the surrounding wilderness to take center stage. Radiant-heated floors, a solar array and a wind turbine complete the home’s independent energy system, while eco-conscious materials and advanced thermal technology ensure comfort year-round.
