New York City commits to installing heat pumps

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the city’s commitment to install window heat pumps in 20,000 apartments across the city’s housing over the next five years. This marks a significant milestone in addressing the climate crisis; commercial and residential buildings are key contributors to U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. These buildings account for over 30% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions through heating, cooling, cooking and electricity use. In larger cities, such as New York City, buildings contribute nearly 70% of emissions.

Heat pumps can reduce emissions by enabling a transition from gas-powered boilers to running on renewable electricity and providing both heating and cooling. According to the International Energy Agency, heat pumps are more energy efficient than traditional heating sources.
